The Imposter Bluff
This is applied coaching in the form of a love note from my heart and mind to yours.
Have you ever been called on in a group to give your thoughts or a response and have NOTHING to say?
Talk about panic, am I right?
You can feel everyone in the room staring at you.
You can’t find words.
You get all stumbly or graspy and your mind races through these super unhelpful thoughts:
$#&%!
I have no idea what to say
What did I miss?
I don’t know the answer
This is not going well
This sucks
I’m gonna fail
AAAAAAHHHHHHH.
Self-doubt.
When it’s present in your mind it pops up at the MOST inopportune times.
Here’s a text I got from a friend who was thrown for a loop when self-doubt crept in as they neared a critically important transition in their life:
That’s self-doubt. That’s imposter syndrome.
“I’m not sure I’m good enough.”
“They don’t really want/need/love/like/appreciate/value me.”
This is your brain trying to bluff you out of doing something because of the fear that it MIGHT lead to rejection or humiliation.
Your brain is giving you this Imposter syndrome, self-doubt line of BS to see if you really want it. Is it worth the risk?
Here’s the response I sent back, in case some of these thoughts and self-doubt are weighing on you too:
…
You’ve got to quiet the reactionary spiral of self-doubt, practice your own internal curiosity, and be an advocate of kindness to yourself.
If you would like a guide to unpack some of those self-doubt spirals, come coach with me inside Level Up. You’ll get training on how to make peace with default counterproductive thoughts and release the hurtful stories that are holding you back from your joy and all of your potential.
